∇ PYRAMID NYC Artist Home and Studio
2019
Site : Williamsburg Waterfront, Brooklyn, New York
Advisor : Margarita McGrath
Located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, a neighborhood characterized by a contemporary art scene and hipster culture, the proposed artist housing sits on the edge of East River as a monumental, sculptural architecture to celebrate the liveliness artists bring to the city. The site consists of an inverted pyramid that contains living units, shared workshops, studio space, a gallery, and quality green space.
The project was inspired by Noguchi’s pursuits in his artistic life that spaces as sculptures are made for the land, the place, and the people—a communication beyond time and into the space of our earth.
20 stories of studio units, 48 units per floor, build up the inverted pyramid enveloped in white frosted glass, providing the creative practitioners a community to connect and communicate. The southwest corner on every storey is a communal observation deck to the views of the bigger New York City; rooftops of workspace and studios also serve as gathering spots private to the residents.
A system of hollow structural sections (HSS) is designed to hold up the entire inverted pyramid. HSS refers to high-strength welded steel tubing that have high radius of gyration about both axes providing superior compression performance and significant weight savings commonly used for high-rise.
